'Conflict Management in International Peace Operations: A handbook For Officers and Soldiers', 2003,was originally written in Norwegian on assignment of The Norwegian Defence International Centre (NODEFIC) in 2001. An English updated Version was printed in 2003 and reprinted in 2006.
Addressing a wide range of conflict related challenges, the book also includes a chapter on kidnapping survival. in addition to practical advice, this chapter presents a variety of psychological tools that may improve a victim's situation in captivity and enhance the chances of a positive outcome.
The book has been wery well received by both conflict/peace researchers, psychologists, and peace-keepers using the book as a practical guide in the field:
"I was able to read your Conflict Management Handbook which I regard with some degree of awe. You have been able to apply complex psychological phenomena to a critical set of problems - peacekeeping - and done it in a way that an average soldier or officer can understand,- . Your use of the literature is masterful-." Dr. Leonard Goodstein, Former CEO and Executive Vice President of the American Psychological Association, author of several textbooks.
“I am so glad that our mutual friend brought your book to my attention. I have enjoyed reading it very much. It is full of great
conceptual insights and practical implications.- Your section on kidnapping is excellent.”
Dr Robert B. Cialdini, Regents’ Professor Emeritus of Psychology & Marketing, Arizona State University,
author of i.e Influence. and Pre-suasion.
"Olav Ofstad has drawn on research from social psychology, which is vastly under-utilized from a conflict pserspective. He uses knowledge from social psychology for conflict management in a new, constructive way that is extremely useful for readers" : Dr.Evelin Lindner, Founder of Human Dignity and Humiliation Studies and author of 'Making enemies unwittingly: Humiliation and International Conflict.'
"Olav Ofstad brings a special combination of intelligence, insight, passion and compassion to his life's mission. I found his ideas and methods for bringing people together, and for helping them reframe their separate realities toward cooperation and shared success to be most enlightening. He writes simply, clearly, and from the heart- and from experience." Dr. Karl Albrecht, author of "Social Intelligence: The New Science of Success."
"This handbook offers practical approaches to conflict resolution and is designed to be a user friendly manual for military and other personnel in international peace operations. It is being used for teaching purposes at NODEFIC as well as by peacekeepers in the field. Feedback from users, who have found this book both timely and useful, suggests it provides the essential foundation needed to be an effective peace-keeper.": Øyvind Dammen, Director, Norwegian Defence International Centre 2006
